G-P vs. Calallen
CORPUS CHRISTI — The Gregory-Portland Lady Cats advanced to the next round
of the Class 4A playoffs after their 49-44 win over Calallen at King High School
Friday.
G-P will take on San Antonio South San, which beat Mission Veterans Memorial 74-44.
G-P built a 12-7 margin in the first period thanks to steady defense and a bit of
luck. With Calallen's Amanda Haven blanketed all over the Lady Cats leading scorer
Cecilee Perez, G-P had to rely on Lauren Carter, but that too failed when she picked
up her second foul in the first quarter with over one minute left and did not return
until the second half.
G-P coach Vince Stark went to his bench early and Shelby Poorman answered.
The reserve post led the Lady Cats with 14 points before she fouled out late in
the contest.
"I thought we played exceptionally well tonight, we had some girls step up tonight
that we needed to step up, especially Shelby Poorman and Megan Wright," said Stark.
Meanwhile Haven, Calallen's leading scorer, was having her struggles in the first
half scoring just four points, but caught fire in the second half, finishing with a
game-high 21 points.
G-P opened up a 14-7 lead in the second when Perez hit and after Dina Rodriquez
answered for Calallen, Poorman hit consecutive baskets as G-P took an 18-9 lead with
3:35 remaining.
Rodriquez and Haven then hit a pair of free throws each and Calallen was within 18-13,
but Perez hit a pair of her own from the charity stripe for G-P. Calallen then got a
3-pointer from Valerie Perez to make the score 20-16, but G-P's Kayla Alford put back
an offensive rebound and the Lady Cats led 23-16 at the intermission.
Carter returned to open the third and connected quickly as G-P took a 25-16 advantage
and then extended its lead to 29-18 with 4:55 left when Perez hit. Carter then picked
up her third foul and Valerie Perez then took control for Calallen, picking off two
errant G-P passes and converting both into baskets to get Calallen within 29-23.
