GIRLS GAME: T-M 48, CALALLEN 44 The Cherokees (25-9, 7-2) clinched at least a share of the District 31-4A championship Friday night with a girls basketball home victory over the Wildcats (16-15, 6-3). T-M guard Courtney Rhyne celebrated her 18th birthday in style Friday, as she scored five straight points in the final 2:04 of the game to snap a 42-all tie and lead T-M to the victory. The Cherokees would win the district title outright with a road victory over defending district champion Flour Bluff Tuesday. A Hornets win Tuesday could make for a three-way tie for first place, depending on if the Wildcats win their home game Tuesday against Kingsville. "This is the biggest Cherokee victory in 11 years -- we haven't won a district title since 1997 and we wanted another (district championship) banner in our gym," T-M girls coach Matt Oden said.
