Scary moment: Top scorer Haven passes out on court
By Stuart Duncan (Contact)
Calallen/T-M hoops
The Calallen girls basketball team put so much into
Tuesday night's game that senior forward Amanda Haven
passed out at halfcourt after leading the Wildcats to a
thrilling 62-55 overtime triumph over District 31-4A rival
Tuloso-Midway.
Haven was carried off by teammates into the locker room but
eventually recovered after scoring a game-high 26 points for
Calallen (12-14 overall, 2-2 district), facing a virtual
must-win against the Cherokees (21-8, 3-1) after dropping
its first two district home games of the season.
Wildcats coach Beverly Barker said it wasn't the first time
that Haven had passed out. She's had several medical tests
done on her heart, but doctors haven't discovered the problem
yet.
Haven and her teammates simply wouldn't let Calallen -- which
missed the playoffs last season -- fall out of the district
playoff race.
Haven scored seven points in overtime to help the Wildcats
outscore T-M 11-4 in the extra frame.
"They had more players step up and make plays tonight than we
did, and that's what it takes to win a big game like this,"
Cherokees coach Matt Oden said. "We've just got to lick our
wounds and put this game behind us, because we've got
(defending 31-4A champion) Flour Bluff coming into our place
on Friday."
Calallen scored the first seven points of overtime to take
a 58-51 lead with 1:48 remaining in the extra session.
Haven scored five points during that key spurt by the Wildcats,
while guard Stephanie Lewis added a key putback.
T-M junior guard Kensi Terrell's layup stopped that run and
pulled the Cherokees within five with 1:33 to play in the game.
Guards Valerie Perez and Leslyn Felder then converted a free
throw each to stake the Wildcats to a 62-53 lead and help put
the game away.
Perez finished with 14 points, while Lewis had a game-high 11
rebounds to go with nine points.
Wildcats guard Dina Rodriquez -- who left the game after suffering
an injury to her left arm in the closing minutes of overtime --
scored all of her 11 points in the final 20 minutes of play.
"I think T-M is one of the top two teams in South Texas, and I was
so proud our girls for stepping up and playing the way they did
against them," Barker said.
Cherokees 6-foot senior post Brandi Park scored 11 of her team-high
24 points in the first half and added nine rebounds and two big blocks.
T-M junior guard Kensi Terrell also reached double figures with 15 points.
The Cherokees scored the final four points of regulation -- on junior
guard Kristin Alphin's pull-up jumper off the glass and a steal and
fast-break layup by Terrell -- to send the game into overtime.
"I was proud of how our girls came back to tie the game (in regulation),
" said Oden, whose team had a chance to win the game at the end of
regulation but missed a layup at the buzzer. "It seemed like we were
on our heels and were playing from behind for (much) of the night."

Top Gun: #15 Amanda Haven drives and scores in the overtime period. Amanda drilled 26 points to lead all scorers. In the over time period, she scored 7 points; and in the final 2 minutes, she put on a dribbling exhibition in keeping the basketball on Calallen's side of the court. A senior and true leader who gave her all, and when the final buzzer sounded, and Calallen had won and upset a fine Tuloso-Midway team, then she fainted with exhaustion.

#13 Dina Rodriguez drives to the basket and scores! Down the stretch of the game, she was fouled, and hit the floor hard, and injured her arm, and had to leave the game. and the refs ruled intentional, #1 Leslyn Felder came in and and scored one of two free-throws.

Cheerleader of the week. Ms. Sarah Guerrero. Great support in cheering the Lady Wildcats to Victory.

#24 Velerie Perez on the jump-shot -- Swoosh! 13 points for the evening.

Introducing Kaylee Lowrance, Junior Varsity Cheerleader, sister of Connor, and daughter of coach and Ms. Randy Lowerance. Excellent performance!
