ALICE - Tuesday night turned out to be quite an evening for several District 31-4A baseball teams.

Alice rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to upset state-ranked Calallen 6-5.
The Coyotes improved to 6-3 in the standings and clinched the third playoff spot for its first trip
to the postseason since 2002.

"Everybody was ready for this game," said Chris Pena, who drove in the winning run with a
no-out hit to left field. "We had to win and came out with the victory."

Alice is expected to face 32-4A runner-up Mercedes in the first round of the playoffs,
a bi-district matchup that is likely to be hashed out once the regular season is over.
The Coyotes close out against Tuloso-Midway on Friday.

The Wildcats, ranked No. 2 in the state behind Moody, dropped to 7-2 in district and
remains tied for first place with Robstown. Tuloso-Midway defeated the Cotton Pickers
3-1 on Tuesday.

Trailing 5-3, Sabas Perez and R.J. Gomez opened the bottom of the seventh with back-to-back singles.
Calallen ace Ryan Duke then walked designated hitter Roman Gomez to load the bases.

J.P. Garcia followed with a two-run double into the right-field corner to tie the score and knock
Duke out of the game. Meanwhile, pinch runner Justin Guerrero, in for Roman Gomez, held up
at third. With Kristian Bueno now pitching, Calallen intentionally walked Allen Rios to load
the bases again. Pena then smacked a single over a draw-in outfield to score Guerrero and
end the game.

"I was just trying to hit it somewhere," said Pena, who also earned the victory for his work on
the mound.

Ryan Duke opened the game with a walk and was replaced at first base by courtesy runner Matt Garza,
who promptly stole second. Garza then went to third when pitcher Pena botched the throw to first
on Jeramie Marek's sacrifice bunt.

With Steven Vidaurri at the plate, Marek broke for second and made it safely ahead of the throw
by catcher Rios. Garza alertly took off for home and completed the double steal to give Calallen
a 1-0 lead.

The Wildcats went on to load the bases, but Pena forced Derek Hagy into a pop fly to end the
threat.

Alice answered Calallen's run in the bottom of the second after Rios led off with a base hit up
the middle. Zac Garza, the courtesy runner for Rios, advanced to second on a passed ball.
Pena then smoked a line drive down the left-field line that sent Steven Vidaurri chasing

after the ball. Garza scored easily on the play to tie the game 1-1 and give the Coyotes some
momentum. Perez struck out to begin the bottom of the third, but R.J. Gomez came up with a base hit.Gomez ended up at second on a passed ball and was forced to hold there when Garcia reached on an infield single that bounced off Duke's right foot.
Rios then sliced a double to the gap between center and right to drive in Gomez and Garcia
and put Alice in front 3-1.

Calallen retaliated with two runs in the top of the fourth, a rally David DeLeon started when he hit a one-out double to left. He moved to third on Aaron Alaniz's ground out to shortstop and soon was joined on the bases by Duke after drawing his second walk of the game.
The Coyotes had a chance to end the at-bat when Marek hit a grounder to shortstop, a routine play until Garcia misfired on the throw to first. The error allowed DeLeon to score easily and kept Calallen at the plate.
Vidaurri tied the game 3-3 with a base hit to center that scored Garza, the courtesy runner for Duke.
