Wildcats pounce on Lobos in blowout win
Pitching, offense both come up big for Calallen
By GEORGE VONDRACEK Caller-Times
May 21, 2006

Less than 24 hours after managing a mere five hits off Brownsville Lopez
pitching, Calallen busted out the heavy metal Saturday afternoon.

The metal the Wildcats used isn't even listed on the Periodic Table.

The Wildcats strolled into the Region IV-4A semifinals on a scorching afternoon, pounding four Lopez pitchers for 18 hits in a 21-1 victory at the Calallen diamond. That gave the 31-7-1 Wildcats a sweep of the best-of-3 regional quarterfinal series and sends the defending 4A state champions into next weekend's series with sixth-ranked Uvalde. The Coyotes beat New Braunfels Canyon 7-1 on Saturday to win that best-of-3 series 2-1.

The difference Saturday - pitching, as both Lopez coach Alberto Leal and Calallen coach Steve Chapman concurred.

"Definitely pitching," Leal said. "What can I say? They hit the ball and we didn't. We tried every pitcher we could. We tried everything we could. Hey, they're good."

Calallen right-hander Sean Hoelscher (11-2) held the 20-12 Lobos to three hits and struck out nine. Five Wildcats had multiple hit games, paced by Bucky Bryant's 3-for-3, three-RBI performance. Bryant - his fifth - and Ryan Duke - his first - each belted home runs. Six Wildcats - Duke, Jeramie Marek, Wes Callihan, Ryan Miller, Justin Harper and Paul Flores - each drove in two runs.

It was a stark contrast to Friday's 2-1 Calallen win in the opener when Duke outdueled Lopez's Pira Rodriguez with a 14-strikeout effort.

"The guy who threw last night was really good," Chapman said. "Not that these guys weren't, but you go from 88-92 mph fastballs with a good slider, that's a big difference."

That played out immediately when Calallen pounced on Leo Zamarripa for five runs and seven hits in the first 1.2 innings. The Wildcats sent 13 batters to the plate in the second as Duke and Bryant each launched two-run homers, with Duke's chasing Zamarripa (4-4) and Bryant's chasing Luis Medrano, who failed to record an out. Wes Callihan and Ryan Miller each drove in two runs in the inning as Calallen built a 9-0 lead.

The offensive uprising was expected by Chapman.

"I did because I'd heard their Nos. 2-3 pitchers were not as strong as their No. 1," Chapman said. "In baseball, pitching is the name of the game."

Hoelscher was touched for one unearned run, which Lopez scored in the fourth when Hoelscher hit Michael Sanchez with the bases loaded and two outs.

"They played solid defense and they've got awesome pitching. They kept us off-balance," Leal said. "They struck out our 1-2-3 hitters both games. That should tell you something right there. We didn't hit the ball. That's a credit to their pitching."

Calallen scored five more runs in the third to turn the game into a laugher and again batted around in the fourth, scoring seven times to set up the showdown with Uvalde.

"We know they're good. We know they're very talented baseball players and have got good pitching," Chapman said of Uvalde. "They played in the Robstown tournament and 10-run ruled Moody. We talked to different people and we saw them play they other night. We know they're good."
