Pitching saves day for 'Cats
Deep rotation helps Calallen claim 9th crown
Most high school baseball teams usually run out of pitchers by the end of a tournament.
Not Calallen.
Junior Logan Verrett scattered four hits and struck out 10 to help the host Wildcats claim a 6-3 victory over Carroll Saturday night in the championship game of their annual tournament, their ninth straight title. Meanwhile, the offense rattled junior varsity call-up Jesse Ortiz early and often and eventually chased him off the mound in the sixth inning.
The Tigers put Verrett in a jam several times, but ended up stranding five runners - all in scoring position.
"He battled out of a couple situations where he could've folded the tent, but he didn't," Calallen coach Steve Chapman said. "I'm proud of the performance he had tonight."
Carroll coach Lee Yeager left Wildcat Field just as impressed.
"The guy threw well, and his velocity was pretty good," Yeager said. "He got the breaking ball over and kept us off balance. They just put a lot of pressure on you once they get the lead."
Carroll threatened to break open the game in the top of the first after Ryan Mungia knocked a one-out single to left field. Verrett then walked Jeremy Narvaez on four pitches before freezing cleanup hitter Alex Lozano on a called third strike.
The right-hander's next offering hit Rudy Garcia, loading the bases with two outs. A passed ball allowed Mungia to score and give the Tigers a 1-0 lead, but Verrett recovered from a 3-0 count to strike out Brock Millet.
Calallen retaliated immediately, pouncing on Ortiz for a run to tie the game. It could've been worse.
Ryan Duke opened the bottom of the first by slapping a base hit to center field and moved to second when Ortiz hit Jeramie Marek. Steven Vidaurri then loaded the bases with a single up the middle.
Sean Hoelscher followed with a base hit to left that scored Duke. Chapman waived Marek around third base, but Narvaez's relay throw from Mungia to catcher Zach Luevanos arrived just in time for a play at the plate.
The Wildcats went on to load the bases again only to have the inning end when Lozano stretched out to make a diving snare on David DeLeon's grounder to first.
Calallen took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second and stretched it to a three-run advantage after four innings. The Tigers cut the deficit to 4-3 in the top of the fifth, but the Wildcats answered with two runs in the sixth to put the game away.
Despite taking the loss, Yeager said Ortiz earned at least one more start.
"He kept us in the game and gave us a chance," he said.
