February 27, 2007Calallen's arms hold back G-P in blowout
Winning Wildcats get big outing from Duke, 3 relievers
As if Ryan Duke and Sean Hoelscher weren't enough to deal with, Calallen's opponents have to be wary of any arm the Wildcats decide to use.
Duke pitched three strong innings before being followed by Hoelscher, David DeLeon and Logan Verrett in a 10-0 non-district victory over Gregory-Portland (3-4 overall) at Whataburger Field on Monday. The four combined to hold G-P to only four hits in a game than ended after six innings because of the 10-run mercy rule
. "It's exactly what we came to do," said Calallen coach Steve Chapman, whose team went 4-2 last weekend at a tournament in McAllen. "We wanted to get some pitchers some work and we got most all of them in. We swung the bat well and got some breaks early in the game."
Calallen (6-2), the state's top-ranked team in Class 4A, wasted little time in setting the tone.
Jeramie Marek reached on an error to start the game and quickly scored on an RBI single by Duke. Courtesy runner Matthew Garza replaced Duke at second base and when G-P second baseman Arick Cortez misplayed a grounder by Steven Vidaurri, he raced home for the second run of the game.
After Hoelscher walked, DeLeon dropped a double just inside the chalk down the left-field line to score Vidaurri and Hoelscher. DeLeon then moved to third on a sacrifice fly to center by Marcus Irvine and eventually scored on a fielder's choice by Patrick Frazier.
All nine Calallen hitters made it to the plate in the top of the first, after which the Wildcats led 5-0. The output continued briefly in the second.
Marek opened with a long double that bounced off the fence in left-center field. He advanced to second on another base hit by Duke, which chased G-P starter Lucas Gonzalez from the game.
Vidaurri lined out to center on the seventh pitch from reliever Richie De La Garza, allowing Marek to score and give Calallen a 6-0 lead. De La Garza regrouped to strike out Hoelscher and DeLeon to end the inning.
It's all the offense Calallen needed with Duke (2-0) in control.
The senior right-hander struck out seven, bringing his season total to 25 following the 18 he amassed in no-hit effort over Sinton to open the season
"Ryan is Ryan and he's going to do a good job for us," Chapman said. "When ever we send him out there he's going to compete."
