Wildcats punish Panthers

Calallen pitching, offense strong in tourney victory

Most of Calallen's opponents know plenty about senior hurlers Ryan Duke and Sean Hoelscher

The rest of the arms in the rotation are just as capable.

Sophomore Jordan John gave up three hits and posted 11 strikeouts to help the Wildcats past Laredo United South 13-2 Thursday afternoon in the first round of Calallen's annual tournament. The left-hander retired the first nine batters he faced and struck out the side twice.

"I had my fastball working and was able to hit my spots," said the 6-foot-3, 180-pound John. "I just threw strikes and let my defense help me out."

The offense did its part as well.

Ryan Duke and Jeramie Marek walked to lead off the bottom of the first. Steven Vidaurri's single up the middle scored Duke, but United South left fielder Erasmo Jasso bobbled the ball, allowing Marek to score.

Vidaurri then scored with two outs when second baseman Jose Vasquez booted a grounder by David DeLeon, giving Calallen a 3-0 lead. Logan Verrett made it a four-run advantage with a double that drove in DeLeon

The carnage continued in the second.

The Wildcats scored five runs five hits, including back-to-back home runs by Steven Vidaurri (two-run) Sean Hoelscher (solo). Verrett chipped in an RBI single and Derek Hagy an RBI double.

Calallen added two runs in the third and two in the fourth, which helped end the game after four and a half innings because of the 10-run mercy rule.

"We're capable of a lot, we just have to put it all together," said Verrett, who drove in two runs and scored two. "We have a strong pitching staff this year. Once we put it together we should be a pretty good ballclub."

John just wants to do his part.

"We have six or seven pitchers that can go the distance for us," he said. "Having that many arms is just awesome. Playing behind Ryan and Sean, they teach me a lot of stuff. They give me pointers. I listen because I really want to perfect my skills and get to the level where they are."
