The rankings were right.

Calallen, the state's No. 1 team in Class 4A, had little problem handling No. 2 Moody in a 4-1 victory Thursday night at Whataburger Field. Ryan Duke struck out 12 and scattered only five hits in a non-district game that drew nearly 5,000 fans..

"It was great to come out here and see a crowd like that," said Duke, who improved to 4-1 and increased his strike out total to 62 in handing the Trojans only their second loss this season. .

"It's great for South Texas baseball, and it's great for us," Duke said. "I'm glad I got the opportunity to pitch." .

Fans lined up outside the stadium more than two hours before the first pitch, a sign that this was no ordinary game. Once the Wildcats (16-3 overall) took control, they didn't let up. .

Duke and Jeramie Marek grounded out to open the bottom of the first, but Steven Vidaurri kept Calallen at the plate with a base hit to left field. Vidaurri moved to second on a wild pitch, and then Sean Hoelscher walked on four pitches. .

Kris Guerrero followed with a double to an open space in right-center field to score Vidaurri and Hoelscher and give the Wildcats a 2-0 lead. .

"Our leadoff hitter just told me sit on the fastball," Guerrero said. "It was right there so I took it for a little ride. It landed in the gap, and we got two runs out of it." .

Duke said the two early runs helped him find a groove. .

"It was a big lift getting two runs in the first inning," he said. "I just threw strikes and let my team work for me." .

After facing four batters in the top of the first, Duke retired nine of the next 11, including six on strikeouts. He gave up a run in the fifth on an RBI single by Joey Mendoza that scored Rudy Flores, but that's all the offense the Trojans (18-2) managed. .

"He's a hell of a pitcher," said Moody senior outfielder Rudy Grande, who tagged Duke for a double in the third. "When he gets up there he owns that mound. We weren't used to seeing a slider break that much, and his fastball had bit more velocity on it. We didn't make the adjustments that we needed to." .

The Wildcats added to its lead in the third, which Hoelscher led off with a double that bounced off the wall in left. Hoelscher went to third on a wild pitch and then scored on a fielder's choice to second by Guerrero. .

Calallen coach Steve Chapman wasn't surprised by Guerrero's contributions. .

"Kris has done that all year long for us," Chapman said of the junior catcher. "That's why he's hitting fifth in the lineup right now." .

Even the bottom of the order chipped in Thursday night. .

Leading 3-1 with two outs in the bottom of the fifth, David DeLeon lifted an 0-1 pitch to right field. The ball continued to carry until hitting the top of the wall for a solo home run. .

"We got some key hits when we needed them, and it worked out for us," Chapman said. .

Duke struck out Moody's first two batters in the top of the seventh before walking Grande on five pitches. Grande took third on a passed ball and then went to third on a base hit by Joey Mendoza. .

Andrew Perez then popped up to shortstop Jeramie Marek to end one of the most highly anticipated games in South Texas. Duke said the Wildcats hardly paid attention to all the hype leading up to it. .

"It's been a real lazy week for us," he said. "We haven't had any school because of spring break and have had curfews every night. We were ready to come out here and play. I think we showed that all throughout the game." .
