Believe the hype
Game 2 is another nailbiter as Trojans tie series with win

It can't get much better than this.
Unless of course you happen to be Steve Chapman or Corky Gallegos, the
coaches for Calallen and Moody respectively, who are aging at an
accelerated rate.
Dare one say there has been more drama surrounding an area baseball
playoff series other than what has engulfed Whataburger Field the
last two days? At least
Friday night to see Ronnie Flores keep the top-ranked Trojans' season
alive.
The senior third baseman's bases-loaded single with two outs in the
bottom of the 10th handed top-ranked Moody a 3-2 win, forcing a third
and deciding game with the ninth-ranked Wildcats in the best-of-3
Region IV-4A area series.
Game 3 will take place at 7 p.m. today, also at Whataburger Field.
Moody (32-3) won the postgame flip and will be home team.
"It was some kind of game," said Flores, who kept his hitting streak
alive at 29 games with the single, his first of the night. "Both teams
are playing hard. It's a senior group. Nobody wants to leave each
other."
Pity is that one of these teams won't be playing next week against
either South San Antonio or Mission in the quarterfinal round.
That is fueling the notion, with respect to the other 14 teams
still alive in the region, that the Calallen-Moody matchup is one
for the regional championship, not just area bragging rights.
"I think so. We've both been playing hard," Flores said. "Whoever
makes it though this is going to make it far in the playoffs."
Moody coach Corky Gallegos concurred.
"That's what we told our kids. This is the regional final and we're
going to play backward," Gallegos said, smiling. "No disrespect to
the other teams in the region, but with the hype and the attention,
the winner of this is going to come out and do something big."
Both teams had numerous chances to score in extra innings. In the final
three innings, the Wildcats (29-7) stranded five, while the Trojans
left eight aboard.
But Moody got the one across when it needed in the 10th off Calallen
reliever David DeLeon. Flores laced a 1-2 pitch into center field to
drive home Rudy Grande, who coaxed a 3-2 walk from Calallen's Logan
Verrett (3-1).
That made a winner of Moody ace Gabriel Morales (8-1). Morales came on
for Miguel Gonzalez and threw five innings of three-hit ball,
striking out four.
"I was just trying to put the ball in play, trying to get another run
in," Flores said.
The Moody win Friday came after a 4-3, eight-inning Calallen victory
in Thursday's opener that also ended in dramatic fashion.
Pitcher Ryan Duke won his own game with an RBI single with two outs.
He also drove in both of Calallen's runs on Friday with singles in
the first and third innings.
Wildcats starter Sean Hoelscher was equally effective, if not more so
Friday. He threw 8.1 innings, striking out 16 and walking only one.
He tossed 123 pitches before being relieved by Verrett.
"That guy is unbelievable," Gallegos said of Hoelscher. "You have to
give him all the credit in the world. He was electric. He made us
look bad. I can't tell who's better, him or Duke.
Duke turns around and catches tonight.
"I expected a lot, but he was more than we expected."
Hoelscher's one bad inning, however, negated a 2-0 Calallen lead.
Christian Gallegos singled with one out and Andrew Perez followed with
his third home run, a two-run shot that landed on the berm in left
field. After that, Hoelscher retired 16 of the next 17 Trojans, nine
via strikeout.
"This is as big a game I've ever been associated with in high school
baseball," Gallegos said. "You ask if we can top it. We've had some
good ones with (Austin) Reagan. But it's not over. That's the exciting
thing."
