Triple threat
Hernandez's three-run shot propels Pickers to share of title

ROBSTOWN - Robstown junior baseball player Trey Hernandez prefers to drive in his runs three at a time this season.
That was good news for the Cotton Pickers Tuesday
night, who used Hernandez's three-run home run in the
first inning to overcome an early deficit and post a 7-1
home victory over District 31-4A rival and defending Class 4A state
champion Calallen.

The Cotton Pickers (22-8 overall, 12-1 in district games)
clinched a share of the District 31-4A title Tuesday
and can win it outright with a victory over Flour Bluff Friday night.

It would also be Robstown's first outright district title since 2001.
"Trey's home run gave us a big boost tonight - he's been
doing that all year for us," said Robstown coach Steve Castro,
whose team also won the previous district meeting between the
teams, 4-3 in eight innings at Calallen High School to sweep its
first district series from the Wildcats in 12 years. "I
knew we were going to hit the ball tonight - I was
just hoping we would get the good pitching to go with it.
(Senior pitcher) Matt Flores did a great job tonight to
keep (the Wildcats) off of the bases."

Calallen (24-7 overall) - which has already clinched a playoff spot along with
Robstown and Gregory-Portland (11-2 in district play) - dropped to 10-3 in district games.

"(Hernandez) is a great hitter," said Wildcats coach Steve Chapman, whose
team will host Gregory-Portland Friday night in its district finale.
"We just didn't do (many) things well tonight but we'll
bounce back from this." Hernandez's three run blast in the bottom
of the first inning - which was his eighth home run of the
season and fifth three-run homer - gave the Cotton Pickers a 3-1 lead.

Hernandez turned on a 1-0 pitch and lined it over the left field
fence to score Joe Solis who walked and Flores who singled.
"Any time we can come back and take the lead on a team right
after they score is (huge)," said Hernandez, who also has a
grand slam this season. "We're playing with a lot of confidence right
now but we know we've still got one more (district) game left."

Calallen pitcher Sean Hoelscher (8-2) was able to get out of
the inning and pitch around Ricky Mendez's one-out double by striking
out the final two batters of the frame, but the damage
had already been done.

Robstown added three runs in the second inning, as James Gonzalez
and Oscar Solis scored on a Calallen throwing error and
Joe Solis (who was 2 for 3 with three runs
in the game) scored on a balk

Mendez later added a run-scoring infield single in the fourth inning
to extend the Cotton Pickers' lead to 7-1.

The Wildcats earlier took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning,
as one-out singles by Wes Callihan, Ryan Duke and Steven
Vidaurri led to Ryan Miller's two-out bases loaded walk.

Flores escaped further damage by striking out the final batter of the frame on three pitches. "This (victory) is awesome," said Flores, who scattered five hits in
seven innings, walked three and struck out six. "This gives
us a lot of confidence going into our last game and the playoffs."

Flores - who also pitched out of a bases loaded jam in the sixth inning
by retiring the final two batters of that frame on a strikeout
and a ground out - received some nice defensive help in the fifth,
as Cotton Pickers catcher Aaron Martinez threw out a Calallen runner
trying to steal third to end that inning.

Hoelscher yielded nine hits, walked five, hit a batter and struck out 11
in his six innings for the Wildcats.
