Cotton Pickers seal top seed
Robstown's timely hitting too much for No. 2 Calallen
By STUART DUNCAN Caller-Times
April 29, 2007ROBSTOWN - Robstown is the first place team in District 31-4A again, while the much
anticipated Calallen vs. Moody baseball playoff showdown could come sooner than
many people expected. The Cotton Pickers capped off a roller-coaster week in District 31-4A by erasing an early
two-run deficit Saturday to post a 7-3 victory over second-ranked Calallen in a
district playoff for first place at Fairgrounds Field. The teams tied for the District 31-4A championship this season with 8-2 district marks -
after both teams lost a district game on the same night earlier in the week - and split
the two head-to-head district games to force Saturday's decisive game. Calallen
blanked Robstown 5-0 in the first district meeting, while the Cotton Pickers
avenged that loss with a 4-2 triumph over the Wildcats in the rematch."Just to play a team like Calallen, that has 3 or 4 Division I players, is an honor let alone
to beat them twice in a season," Robstown coach Steve Castro said."It's disappointing to lose - no matter who it's to, but Robstown has a good ball club,"
Calallen coach Steve Chapman said. "We didn't play a very good game today, and we
haven't been playing well lately. We struggled from the plate today while Robstown got
the hits when they needed them and that was the difference in the game."The Cotton Pickers (24-7-2 overall) receive a first-round playoff bye for the second
consecutive season."We've got to get ready for the playoffs now, and it's my job to get them ready to play,"
Castro said. "Last year, we may've been overconfident (in Robstown's Region IV-4A
quarterfinal series playoff loss) against Gregory-Portland, so I think we'll be hungry
(throughout the playoffs) this year."The Wildcats (26-6), meanwhile, will play either Edcouch-Elsa or Roma (the District 32-
4A third place team will be decided Monday) in the Class 4A bi-district playoffs later in
the week. Top-ranked Moody (29-2) awaits the winner of that game in the second round
of the playoffs."We can still (make a run in the playoffs) - it's just a matter of us getting on a roll,"
Chapman said.Calallen couldn't against the Cotton Pickers' bullpen Saturday, however, as pitchers
Ruben Elizondo and Trey Hernandez combined for five scoreless innings of relief.Elizondo (5-0-2) threw four innings to get the win, as he allowed one earned run on two
hits, walked one and struck out two.Elizondo also received some fine defensive help in the game, which included center
fielder Joey Garcia's diving catch in the fourth inning to take a hit away from Calallen's
Jeramie Marek.Hernandez pitched around two walks in the seventh inning to finish it out for Robstown.
Chris Cruz was 2 for 2 in the game with a run and an RBI to lead Robstown's offense,
while Chris Contreras had a key two-run single in the second inning to give the Cotton
Pickers the lead for good. David Rodriguez (who singled in the fifth inning) and
Hernandez (who tripled in the sixth inning) also had run-scoring hits in the game for
Robstown, while courtesy runner Brandon Gallegos scored three runs and had a stolen
base.Ryan Duke - who will play baseball for the University of Oklahoma next season - was 1
for 3 with a stolen base and RBI for the Wildcats, while David DeLeon and Sean
Hoelscher also combined for 2 RBI for Calallen.Wildcats left-handed pitcher Kristian Bueno (3-2) went three innings and yielded four
runs and one earned run on three hits, walked two and struck out three.Calallen relief pitchers Logan Verrett and DeLeon combined to pitch the final three
innings, they allowed three earned runs on four hits, walked four and struck out three. The Wildcats struck for a run in the first inning, as DeLeon drew a two-out walk with the
bases loaded to score Steven Vidaurri (who singled and stole second base).Robstown's starting pitcher Contreras got out of further trouble when he retired the final
batter of the frame on a ground ball to the shortstop Hernandez.Hoelscher (who was 1-3) also walked with the bases loaded in the second inning to plate
Aaron Alaniz and give Calallen a 2-0 lead.Contreras got some revenge in the bottom of that inning as his two-run single - which
scored Gallegos (who was the courtesy runner for Aaron Martinez after he singled) and
Cruz (who walked) - fueled the Cotton Pickers' three run second inning to stake them to a
3-2 lead. Ricky Mendez started the rally for Robstown by reaching on a Calallen error,
and he later scored on another fielding error by the Wildcats. The Cotton Pickers added to their lead in the fourth inning. Martinez walked to lead off
the inning before the courtesy runner, Gallegos, went to second on Cruz's single. Gallegos
later scored when he stole home on a play in which the Wildcats' catcher dropped the ball
(on ball four to the batter Contreras) near the plate and couldn't find it in time to tag
Gallegos.Cruz and Rodriguez added RBI singles in the fifth inning to extend Robstown's lead to 6-2.
The Wildcats pulled within 6-3 in the sixth inning on Duke's tricky hop single to left field
that scored Verrett (who walked).Hernandez's triple in the bottom of that frame scored James Gonzalez (who singled and
stole second base) to push the Cotton Pickers lead to 7-3 to complete the scoring.

Beautiful day for baseball -- Calallen won the third top seed game a few years back. Calallen will have to play a flawless game to stop the revenge-minded Pickers. |

The ball thrown to the right of home plate, Catcher Kris Guerrero made a fine play, and spun around to tagged the runner; he did but dropped the ball and two runs scores. Big inning for the Pickers. |
