Bring on Moody.Calallen fulfilled the hopes of many local high school baseball fans by beating up on
Roma 19-1 Saturday afternoon to set up a long-awaited playoff showdown against the
top-ranked Trojans. The Class 4A rivals agreed to play the entire best-of-3 series at
Whataburger Field on consecutive nights beginning Thursday.Although the Wildcats (28-6 overall) were focused on the Gladiators (8-18), some
couldn't help but wonder about the road ahead."You never want to overlook someone, but we were kind of thinking about them the
whole time," senior Sean Hoelscher said. "We know we need to get them out of the way
if we want to move on."Hoelscher had a big hand in helping No. 10 Calallen complete the first-round sweep on
Saturday following Friday's 13-0 victory in Roma. The No. 2 arm in the rotation, Hoelscher struck out nine and gave up only two hits in four
plus innings. He also went 3 for 3 with four RBI, but wasn't the only hitter doing damage
at the plate.Jeramie Marek matched Hoelscher with three hits, including two doubles, drove in a run
and scored three. Derek Hagy and Logan Verrett each had two hits, one of those a double
by Verrett. Now that the Wildcats are into the area round, they can turn their attention to Moody.
"You have to take it one game at a time," longtime Calallen coach Steve Chapman said.
"Obviously, we were able to take care of business here. We know what's ahead of us, but we just have to give it our all."The Wildcats did earlier in the season.
Senior ace Ryan Duke led Calallen past Moody 4-1 in a non-district game on March 15
that drew nearly 5,000 spectators to Whataburger Field. The senior ace struck out 12
batters and gave up only five hits for the Wildcats, at the time ranked first in state ahead
of the No. 2 Trojans.Calallen wasted no time in unleashing its offense against Roma.
The Wildcats opened the bottom of the first with four straight hits, beginning with
Marek's double to right-center field. Hagy and Hoelscher then hit back-to-back singles to
left, with Hoelscher's driving in Marek and Hagy for a 2-0 lead.Duke continued with an infield single before being replaced at first base by courtesy
runner Bryden McClure. Hoelscher scored on Steven Vidaurri's grounder to second base,
while McClure ended up at third.A walk to David DeLeon prompted a visit to the mound, which Verrett followed with a
line-drive double to left-center that scored McClure. Verrett's hit ended Julio Hinojosa's
time on the mound, but reliever Rolando Loera didn't fare much better.Kris Guerrero sent Loera's second pitch to the wall in left-center for a two-run double,
putting Calallen in front 6-0. The Wildcats weren't done just yet, however.Aaron Alaniz, the ninth hitter in the lineup, tapped a grounder to Loera for the second
out, but Marek's second at-bat of the inning went for a run-scoring single. Marek went on
to score on a single by Hoelscher, who later made it home along with Hagy after a
fielding error in right.By the time the inning was over, 14 batters had produced 10 runs on nine hits and one
error. Hoelscher said it's going to take a similar effort to get passed the Trojans."We just have to have real good practices all week and make sure we don't mess around,"
Hoelscher said. "We got them the first time, so we have a little bit of confidence. If we
play like I know we can, we know we can do it again."CLASS 4A
