The state's No. 1 baseball team in Class 4A played like it Tuesday night.
Calallen opened the season by trouncing Class 3A No. 3 Sinton 11-0 behind
a masterful outing by senior Ryan Duke. The right-hander struck out 18 of
the 19 batters he faced on only 76 pitches in the six-inning no-hitter and
also chipped in on offense with an RBI triple.
Longtime coach Steve Chapman only heard about what happened.
"From what my coaches said it was a very outstanding performance,
" said Chapman, who is serving a five-game suspension for his ejection from
last year's Region IV-4A championship game against New Braunfels.
"I don't expect something like that every time, but I do hope for it."
Chapman also must sit out one home game later in the season.
Duke wasn't the only one on fire Tuesday. Senior left fielder Steven Vidaurri
went 3 for 4 with a two-run homer that gave the Wildcats a 6-0 lead. He drove
in three runs, as did senior first baseman David DeLeon, who had a triple
among his three hits.
First-year starting catcher Patrick Frazier had a double and a triple.
Junior shortstop Jeramie Marek added two hits and two RBI, including a double.
This early in the season, Chapman is far from content.
"We still have areas we need to improve in," he said. "We had an outstanding
pitching performance, but that's not always going to happen."
