SINTON The baseball field at Sinton High School has never been much of a hitter's park.
Calallen didn't need many against the Pirates in Tuesday's season opener between the two local powerhouses.
The Wildcats (1-0 overall) took advantage of three timely hits and four Sinton (0-1) errors to post
a 4-0 victory over the 2007 Class 3A state semifinalists. Senior ace Logan Verrett (1-0) did his part
by striking out 11 and giving up only three hits.
Calallen coach Steve Chapman said being able to execute small ball made the difference.
"We did a whole different thing than what we normally do and that's bunt and move runners over,"
Chapman said. "We're going to have to probably do that a lot more this year than we have in the past.
We're going to do what ever it takes to score runs."
The Wildcats scored the only runs they would need in the top of the fourth.
Sinton's Cruz Rivas (0-1), who gave up only three hits, beaned leadoff batter Jeramie Marek to
open the inning. Derek Hagy put down a sacrifice bunt, but catcher Gabe Garcia's throw to second
pulled shortstop Shane Segovia off the bag, leaving both runners on base.
After Kris Guerrero walked to load the bases, Rivas caught Skyler Hoelscher looking for the first out.
Patrick Frazier then
reached safely on a fielding error, which allowed Marek to score.
Designated hitter Roland Resendez followed with a sacrifice fly to center to drive in Hagy and give
Calallen a 2-0 lead. The Wildcats scored again in the fifth, which Bryden McClure led off by reaching
second on a fielding error. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Matt Garza and scored on a grounder
to second by Marek.
Resendez drove in another run in the sixth when he doubled to score Frazier, who hit a two-out double
in the previous at-bat. Trailing 4-0, the Pirates just couldn't get back in the game.
"Against that lineup, Cruz was super," Sinton coach Gene Kasprzyk said. "He hit his spots all night and
kept them off-balance. He did more than we expected of him. We just didn't make some routine plays that
you need to win."
Sinton opened the season without junior ace Josh Rodriguez, who broke his left ankle playing basketball.
Rodriguez joined his teammates in the dugout, only in street clothes instead of a uniform and with a cast
on his leg. Kasprzyk expects Rodriguez to miss at least another month.
