High SchoolWildcats control the clock, Coyotes
By George Vondracek (Contact)
CORPUS CHRISTI — Six ballgames into the season, there appears
still to be questions to be answered for both Alice and Calallen high schools.
One thing that isn't questionable is the fact that if one does not possess
the football, one will have a difficult time scoring.
Calallen, the fifth-ranked Class 4A team in the state, proved that
Friday night. The Wildcats controlled the football nearly twice as
long as the Coyotes to grind out a 28-12 victory and open the District 31-4A schedule.
Bryden McClure scored all four touchdowns for the 6-0 Wildcats, who
totaled 374 yards of offense spread nearly evenly across the two halves.
But the big number was time of possession Calallen had the ball for
31 minutes, 36 seconds compared to 16:24 for the 3-3 Coyotes, who lost their
third consecutive game.
Calallen achieved victory despite 11 penalties for 95 yards -
27 fewer yards than the Alice offense was able to generate. The Coyotes were
limited to minus-3 rushing yards in the second half.
Still, the Coyotes weren't run out of Wildcat Stadium. A.J. Benavides' 15-yard
scoring pass to Mateo Gonzalez moved Alice within 21-12 with 7:45 remaining,
and the Coyotes regained possession after Calallen's first punt of the night.
But Calallen's Alan Ford, who earlier blocked a punt to set up the Wildcats second
touchdown, intercepted Benavides and returned the ball to the Alice 8.
McClure, the game's leading rusher with 78 yards on 19 carries, scored on the
next play to seal Calallen's win.
Alice threatened on its first possession of the second half, doubling its
total yards on the three-play drive after R.J. Gomez intercepted Calallen's
Jeramie Marek. Benavides and Gonzalez hooked up on a 44-yard scoring pass
to pull within 14-6.
But the Wildcats came up with another patented time-consuming march. They
used 14 plays to travel 67 yards, draining 6:03 from the clock. They needed
a key 6-yard gain on third down by Marek, the area 4A rushing leader, who was
limited to 34 yards but threw for 211. The Wildcats also were aided greatly
by an Alice offsides penalty on fourth down at its 21. McClure took care of
the final 16 yards, bolting the final 3 to give the Wildcats a 21-6 lead.
The Wildcats didn't light up the statistics chart in the first half, gaining
193 yards, 98 of them passing from Marek. But the 35 plays helped Calallen
control the game as it kept the ball for 15:14.
Conversely, when Alice did have the ball, it was able to do very little - the
Coyotes managed 31 yards of offense on 16 plays. The Coyotes had but one first
down, that coming on their second play from scrimmage, an 8-yard pass from
Benavides to Noe Cantu. After that, the Coyotes went three-and-out on their
final four possessions of the half.
The Wildcats sapped nearly six minutes off the clock on their first possession.
Calallen moved 85 yards on 13 plays to score on McClure's 3-yard run. The drive
included a 34-yard pass from Marek to Kenneth Rosas, a 10-yarder to Logan Verrett
and 7-yard run from McClure on third and 4 from the Alice 12.
Marek was perfect in the first half on nine pass attempts, although one landed
in the hands of Alice's Joseph Chase, who returned it 35 yards to the Alice 43.
It mattered not. Ford sacked Benavides on third down and then blocked the ensuing
punt. Verrett returned it 34 yards to the Alice 8.
Two plays after that, McClure scored his second TD on a 7-yard run. Anthony Cantu's
point-after kick gave the Wildcats a 14-0 lead with 7:02 before halftime.
