High SchoolCalallen remains undefeated
Marek early, defense and special teams late move Wildcats to 7-0

By Lee Goddard (Contact)

Calallen 42, FB 21

CORPUS CHRISTI — After getting pushed around a bit Friday
night, Calallen’s defense and special teams struck back at the
perfect time.

As Flour Bluff pulled to within seven points of the Wildcats at
the start of the fourth quarter of the teams’ District 31-4A showdown,
Calallen came up with two major turnovers to turn around the football
game.

A short field twice allowed the Wildcats’ offense — potent in
the first half — to put the game out of reach. With two drives
totaling 50 yards in the fourth, host Calallen pulled away away
for a 42-21 win at Wildcat Stadium.

The Wildcats (7-0, 2-0) had to fend off the Hornets (4-3, 1-1), who
had a game-opening 87-yard kick return for a touchdown from Michael
Gowens and a 17-play drive that ate nearly 10 minutes off the clock
in the third, pulling Flour Bluff to within 28-21.

But a turnover forced after an errant snap on a Hornets’ punt attempt
and another fumble recovered by Calallen defender Kris Guerrero on
Flour Bluff’s next series led to quick-strike scoring drives of 16 and
34 yards.

Flour Bluff entered the fourth down by seven. Less than five minutes
later, the Hornets trailed by 21.

“We got the ball back. That set up the drives big time,” said Wildcats
quarterback Jeramie Marek, who doubles as a defensive back. “Momentum
just turned right there. I think we fed off that momentum.”

That helped Calallen to its third victory in a row in the series. The
constant swings in momentum, the atmosphere and the rivalry feel led
some players to make playoff comparisons.

“This gives you a taste of what the playoffs are like,” said Marek, who
rushed for two touchdowns and passed for two more. “Flour Bluff’s a
third-round playoff team for sure. I’m sure they’ll go far in the

playoffs.
I hope we do, too.”

Special teams were an issue for the Wildcats. After Gowens’ return, the

next
two Calallen kicks were taken back for a 26.5-yard average before the

Wildcats
started squibbing their kicks. A misplayed hold after an off-the-mark

point-after
snap and a wide-right point-after attempt also cost Calallen points.

“I was glad, excited after the kickoff,” said Gowens, who also rushed

for 82
yards. “I’m mad (at the result), but we’ll learn from it.”

Part of the result came from the Wildcats’ first-half offense, which

scored
on four of the first five times it touched the ball. Marek twice hit

Jordan
John for scoring passes, and Marek and Bryden McClure each capped drives
with short scoring runs.

Still, Flour Bluff stayed close. The Hornets ate up much of the third

quarter
with the long drive, allowing Calallen on the field for only four plays
during the quarter.

“It was tit for tat as far as turnovers,” Wildcats coach Phil Danaher

said.
“Theirs were a little bit bigger, and we were able to go in with our

power game.

“But, man, Flour Bluff is talented. They’re huge, and they’ve got speed.
They will do well. They’re as a good a group as we’ll see in the playoff

for
a while.”

That talent couldn’t undo the turnover damage. A bad snap had Flour

Bluff’s
punter running away from Calallen’s special teams before he lost his

grip
on the football. Three plays later, McClure was in the end zone.

Guerrero appeared to have a touchdown on the next series, but his fumble

return
was called back for an illegal block that was far away from the action.
Didn’t matter. Four plays later, Marek scored and sealed the game
