Game Summary:
Calallen proves to be a dominant 'Cat Marek runs wild in victory over G-P By Lee Goddard (Contact) Saturday, September 29, 2007 Calallen 51, G-P 12 PoORTLAND — Jeramie Marek seems to be getting the hang of being a two-way player. Marek has been one of the area’s best defensive backs, but he is relatively new as Calallen’s quarterback. On Friday night, he showed he can play two ways and be three-dimensional. Marek rattled off scoring runs of 1, 83 and 47 yards, blowing through the G-P defense, as Calallen’s Wildcats blistered the Wildcats of G-P 51-12 in a non-district contest between old rivals. The scoring runs were just the tip of Marek’s night. He rushed for 213 yards and passed for another 172, all in less than three quarters of action. With injuries limiting some of Calallen’s running backs, Marek accounted for 314 of his team’s first 318 total yards. And, lest Marek seem two-dimensional as only a runner and passer, he ended two G-P drives with interceptions. Just imagine what Marek will do when he gets into a comfort zone on offense. “I’m used to defense. I played that as a sophomore,” Marek said. “But I’m still kind of getting used to the offensive position. Everything, the offensive player in me, is based on what our line does.” The line must have been on early. Two big plays by Marek at the start set the tone. On Calallen’s first possession, a 70-yard pass with Mathew Garza on the receiving end put Calallen on the G-P 1. Two plays later, Marek took it over for a 7-0 lead. On the next possession, Marek tore off an 83-yard scoring run, putting G-P in the role it would be in all game — chasing Marek and Calallen. “The guy is awfully good, throwing and running,” said G-P coach George Harris. “He’s got good speed, good agility. He made it a tough night for the Wildcats — the G-P Wildcats, that is.” Calallen did, at times, make the pursuit a little easier for its rivals, getting flagged nine times in the first half for 65 yards in penalties. But Marek helped overcome the setbacks. He had 100 rushing yards before two minutes ticked off in the second quarter, and hit 100 passing yards before the midpoint of the second. G-P, meanwhile, moved the ball but couldn’t finish off drives. Four of G-P’s first-half drives ended in Calallen territory, but only one was finished with points on the board — that being a 35-yard first-quarter field goal from Jonathan Velasco. Marek squelched one G-P drive with a pick at the Calallen 6. An interception by Adam Hoelscher ended another G-P effort, a failed fourth-down conversion — with a huge stop from Alan Ford — and a missed 40-yard field goal made for a futile half for G-P. “We drove to the 18, the 21. We dropped a pass that could have given us six,” Harris said. “Those are the times they made the plays and we didn’t.” But the one big playmaker on both sides was Marek, who seems to be doing just fine learning the ropes at quarterback. “It was just clicking,” Marek said. “I was running and linemen were opening the holes. Credit to everyone. We were coming out fired up to play, and that’s what we did.” OTHER GAMES: Rockport-Fulton 15 Alice 13 Flour Bluff 35 Moody 0 Kingsville 27 Miller 0 Pleasanton 23 Tuloso-Midway 0 Sinton 25 Robstown 14 Skidmore-Tynan 21 Three Rivers 7 Refugio 49 Taft 6 Beeville 30 S.A.
