Calallen’s first loss brings end to season

Wildcats' run to state falls just short with defeat to Unicorns 2007

SAN ANTONIO — It was a situation to which Calallen High School
was accustomed this season – playing from behind and coming back to win.

That situation changed in a resounding way Friday night at Comalander
Stadium on the Alamo City’s northeast side.

Unranked in the statewide Class 4A poll, Austin Lake Travis punished
the second-ranked Wildcats as few ballclubs have been able to do. With
very little going Calallen’s way, the Cavaliers rumbled past the Wildcats
45-14 in the Region IV-4A Division II semifinals.

It was the Wildcats’ first loss in 13 outings. The victory sends the 12-1
Cavaliers into next week’s regional championship game against Beeville, a
24-10 winner of Cibolo Steele.

The District 31-4A champions had fallen behind in nine of 12 ballgames this
season, only to have rallied. That didn’t happen Friday in front of a crowd
of 4,003. Lake Travis running back Chris Aydam rushed for 176 yards and three
touchdowns and highly touted junior quarterback Garrett Gilbert threw for 163
yards and two scores and rushed for another 114 yards on just five carries.

Buried by Lake Travis’ offense and frustrated by numerous dropped passes, the
Wildcats were held scoreless until scoring a safety in the third quarter off
a bad punt snap. On the ensuing series, they then came up with only one of
two scoring drives, a 48-yarder capped by Dustin Vaughn’s 35-yard pass to
Kenneth Rosas.

That only closed the gap to 38-8 and the Cavaliers answered that immediately
on the next series. Gilbert, one of the nation’s most-sought recruits as a
junior, connected with Jason Bird on a 6-yard TD pass, Gilbert’s 38th scoring
pass of the season. Lake Travis totaled 425 yards of offense.

Calallen came right back on Vaughn’s 42-yard scoring pass to Bryden McClure
with 10:54 remaining but it was far too little too late. Vaughn finished
with 209 yards passing on a 13-of-30 effort.

Though the Wildcats outgained the Cavaliers in the second half 213-95, the
damage was done by Lake Travis in the first 24 minutes. Big plays were a huge
part of the Cavs’ attack. Sixteen of Lake Travis’ 56 plays covered at least
10 yards, four covered at least 30 and two — 63- and 61-yard runs by Gilbert
and Aydam, respectively — set up Lake Travis scores.

Before intermission, the proverbial fork was jammed into the Wildcats, who
trailed 38-0. The Cavaliers amassed 330 yards of offense, averaging 11 yards
per play. Aydam had three TD runs and 142 yards on but 10 carries, and Gilbert
had thrown for another 104 and a score and rushed for 84 yards.
