Wildcats averse to repeating history By Javier Becerra (Contact) Sunday, September 9, 2007 SAN ANTONIO -- Last time Calallen played at the Alamodome, a desperation heave to the end zone as time expired allowed Hays Consolidated to escape with a one-point victory in the third round of the playoffs. Saturday's non-district matchup against Laredo United didn't mean as much, but the Wildcats made sure to avoid a repeat of that disappointing finish. Quarterback Dustin Vaughan and flanker Logan Verrett hooked up for a 38-yard touchdown strike with 19 seconds left in regulation to lift Calallen (2-0) to a 21-14 win in the second game of a Texas Football Classic tripleheader. The Longhorns (0-2) had time to run two plays, but Bryden McClure intercepted quarterback Cesar Cardenas for the second time to end the game. "We weren't going to let it happen again," said McClure, referring to last year's 21-20 loss to Hays on the same artificial turf. Calallen and United were headed to overtime until Vaughan's throw to Verrett, which capped a seven-play, 63-yard drive. The Longhorns blitzed up the middle, forcing Vaughan to spin out of the grasp of two defenders. Verrett, meanwhile, managed to shed cornerback Rion Smalls and headed for the right corner of the end zone. With another horde of tacklers bearing down, Vaughan lofted a throw before Verrett turned to look for the ball. Smalls charged in to try and deflect the pass, but Verrett jumped to make the catch. "I was just focusing on the ball and not really worrying about anything else," said Verrett, who led all receivers with four catches for 83 yards. "I got a good push off the defender and went up for it. All I wanted was to come down with the ball." Vaughan knew his intended target when the Wildcats broke the huddle and that the team was running out of opportunities. "I was just trying to do my job out there," he said. "I knew who I was going to throw it to, so I just put it up there with all I had." United took over at its own 35-yard line with 13 seconds play, prompting the Wildcats to drop into deep prevent coverage. Cardenas, still hobbling after tweaking his right ankle early in the second quarter, threw an incomplete pass on first down. With only four seconds on the clock, he unloaded down the field. The ball went into the waiting hands of McClure, who earned the game's Most Valuable Player award for his play on both offense and defense. "Anything for the team," said McClure, who rushed for 83 yards and Calallen's second touchdown. "That's how we get things done." United opened the game at its own 28-yard line and immediately went to work against the Calallen secondary. Cardenas threw an incompletion on the first play from scrimmage to which he responded with a 10-yard pass to Israel Tijerina on second down. The Wildcats flushed Cardenas out of the pocket for minimal yardage on his next two attempts, but a 15-yard penalty for a late hit out of bounds resulted in a first down at the Calallen 42. Cardenas made the Wildcats pay on the very next snap. Again under heavy pressure, Cardenas found Cesar Vanoye wide open behind the secondary. Vanoye caught the ball in stride and raced untouched for the touchdown before kicking the extra point to put the Longhorns in front 7-0 with less than two minutes into the first quarter. Calallen eventually answered with a 4-yard touchdown run by starting quarterback Jeramie Marek, who set up the score when he intercepted United backup Luis Escontrias on the first play following the injury to Cardenas. The Longhorns blocked the extra point, leaving the score at 7-6 with 9:27 left in the second quarter. That turned out to be plenty of time for Calallen to take its first lead of the game. Calallen defensive end Alan Ford sacked Escontrias deep in United territory three plays into the ensuing drive. The ball came loose just as the players hit the ground, which lineman Chris Molano recovered at the 4. All it took was one carry by McClure to cross the goal line. Marek passed to Verrett for the two point conversion, giving Calallen a 14-7 lead with 2:14 before halftime. Calallen nearly scored again when McClure intercepted Cardenas on United's next play, but time ran out after the Wildcats reached the 8.
