High SchoolWildcats cruise past Sandcrabs Calallen takes control with 21 points in second By Javier Becerra Calallen 27, PLC 7 VICTORIA — This time Calallen didn’t need a comeback. The Wildcats (12-0) kept their perfect season intact by dominating Port Lavaca Calhoun for a 27-7 victory in a Class 4A Division II area playoff Friday afternoon at Memorial Stadium. The District 31-4A champions will face the winner of today’s matchup between Austin Lake Travis and Kerrville Tivy in next week’s regional quarterfinals. Calallen trailed in eight of its previous 11 games, including last week’s 31-22 win over Mercedes in the first round. That wasn’t necessary against the Sandcrabs (9-3). After a scoreless first quarter, the Wildcats used a 21-point outburst in the second to take control. Another touchdown in the fourth quarter put the game away. “We’re glad we came out and scored,” quarterback Dustin Vaughan said. “We weren’t going to worry if we got down, though.” Vaughan made sure it didn’t happen. The 6-foot-4, 200-pound junior went 12 of 18 for 163 yards and two touchdowns, the first on a 43-yard screen pass to Bryden McClure, who scored the game’s first points on a 1-yard run. He later connected with Jeramie Marek on an 8-yard touchdown strike. Vaughan also carried three times for 7 yards, including a 6-yard scoring run. “Everything just came together,” said Vaughan, who completed seven of his last eight pass attempts. “Our line got a good push off the ball, and we were getting yards every play.” Not Calhoun. Calallen held the Sandcrabs to only eight first downs and 110 total yards, 103 of that on the ground. The defense set the tone in the first half, during which Calhoun ran only 19 plays for a total of 39 yards. “We didn’t want the offense to have to worry about getting behind, ” said senior linebacker Kris Guerrero, who had a 66-yard fumble return for a touchdown called back because of an illegal chop block. “It was good to come out and get the lead.” Calhoun went through four quarterbacks last week after starter James Ezzell injured his shoulder in the first half of a 31-14 bi-district victory over Floresville. Oliver Chen, Hunter Hammond and Rance Whitaker all took snaps, with Hammond reaching the end zone twice in the fourth quarter on short runs. Ezzell started the game, but the Sandcrabs didn’t do much on the game’s first series, a three and out that stopped at their 41. Things only got worse on Calhoun’s next possession. Calallen had marched 45 yards in 10 plays to the Calhoun 26-yard line when Chen intercepted Mark at the 11. Chen slipped past one tackler and returned the pick just across midfield to the 49. Sterling Jones picked up three yards on first down, but fumbled after being stopped for a 2-yard loss on the next play. Justin Ceballos recovered the ball at the Calallen 48, but the Wildcats eventually were forced to punt from their 49. Calallen held the Sandcrabs to another three and out, bringing the offense onto the field for the third time. It wasn’t easy, but the Wildcats reached the end zone on a 14-play, 45-yard drive capped by McClure’s 1-yard touchdown run. The Wildcats converted three fourth downs along the way, all three on runs b y McClure. The series consumed more than seven minutes and put Calallen in front 7-0 with 7 minutes, 39 seconds left in the second quarter following Anthony Cantu’s extra point. Having secured the momentum, the Wildcats took advantage. Guerrero’s fumble recovery set up a five-play, 55-yard scoring drive highlighted by back-to-back completions of 10 and 23 yards from Vaughan to Kenneth Rosas. Vaughan went on to score from 6 yards out to give Calallen a 13-0 lead with 2:46 left before halftime. The Wildcats scored again with 17 seconds left in the second quarter when McClure took a screen pass 43 yards up the left sideline for a touchdown.
