Wildcats hang on
By Javier Becerra (Contact)
Saturday, September 22, 2007
ROCKPORT — Calallen isn't the dominating force it used to be, but
it still can find ways to win a game.

Quarterback Jeramie Marek rushed for 148 yards and two touchdowns
and passed for 139 yards and two more scores in a 28-13 win over
Rockport-Fulton (2-2) on Friday. Injuries left the Wildcats (4-0)
without six starters, forcing the team to rely on reserve players.

"It's not only what I had to do, but all the backups," Marek said.
"Both our safeties were out, but Roy Davila and Steven Guajardo came
in without much experience and did an excellent job. Everybody has
to take the credit."

Marek had a lot to do with the victory.

The senior carried 20 times and completed all but two of his 14 pass
attempts, including the first nine. He had two throws intercepted,
one of which set up a 9-yard touchdown run by Alex Willis that brought
R-F to within 14-13.

Marek put the game away with a 3-yard touchdown run in the third
quarter and a 19-yard scoring strike to Logan Verrett in the fourth.

"Coach (Phil) Danaher called on me and I didn't want to let him down,"
Marek said. "I just did what I could."

Six Calallen starters were out with injuries, five of those on offense
- running back Oliver Price (dislocated elbow), receiver Adam Hoelscher
(knee), running back Bryden McClure (groin), lineman Don OHair (knee)
and quarterback Jake Huddleston (shoulder). Along with McClure, fellow
safety Hunter Whetsel (concussion) didn't dress out.

Things only got worse against the Pirates.

Backup running back Jared Wyatt left the game with a leg injury early
in the third quarter and didn't return. Defensive end Alan Ford missed
time in the second half with a left shoulder injury.

R-F, meanwhile, was missing standout defensive lineman Colby Witt. The
senior broke his left wrist in last week's win over Robstown and is expected
to be out until the start of district.

R-F opened the game at its own 32-yard line. Quarterback Dalton Conway ran
the ball three straight times, and gained exactly 10 yards to keep the
offense on the field.

A sophomore, Conway then hit Alex Soliz for a 19-yard completion to put
the Pirates right at midfield. The next play went to running back Alex Willis,
who made the most of his first carry.

Conway dropped back to pass, but brought down his arm at the last possible
moment and handed off to Willis. The 5-foot-6, 145-pound junior took off up
the middle before finding a clear path up the right sideline.

Willis ran into two Calallen defenders at the 5, but had enough momentum to
push his way across the goal line. Leon Thomason kicked the extra point to
give the Pirates a 7-0 lead with 9:37 left in the first quarter.

The Wildcats answered immediately with a seven-play, 63-yard drive to tie the game.

Calallen picked up a first down when Collin Simpson hauled in a 9-yard pass
from Marek. He broke free for 21 yards two plays later, a run that had the
potential to turn into a touchdown if not for R-F cornerback Michael Hernandez's
arm tackle as Marek turned the corner around the right.

Facing third and 8 from the 26, Marek kept the ball again, this time taking it
all the way to the end zone. Anthony Cantu's extra point forged a 7-7 tie with
6:14 to go in the first quarter.
