Below is the script that was read at halftime: Determined, dedicated, over-achievers, true champions….these are a few of the words that might be used to describe the seniors of the 1997 Calallen Wildcat football team. In 1997, the Wildcats defeated Edcouch-Elsa in the Regional Finals to advance to the state semi-finals for the fifth consecutive year. The Wildcats lost, 13-3, to the LaMarque Cougars the following week and ended the season with a record of 14 wins and one loss. That season also marked the 13th consecutive year in the state playoffs for the Wildcats. The 1997 team is best remembered for one of the most thrilling victories in Calallen football history. Trailing 10-0 with less than six minutes remaining in the game, the Wildcats mounted a comeback – scoring the game winning touchdown with 22 seconds remaining to claim a 14-10 victory over the Smithson Valley Rangers in the Class 4A Regional Semifinals. It is a game that Calallen fans fondly remember even to this day. The efforts of the ’97 team were instrumental in continuing the Calallen Wildcats winning tradition and the ongoing quest to remain one of the state’s most elite football programs. Since Calallen’s inaugural playoff appearance in 1985, the Wildcats continue to enjoy an unprecedented string of 22 consecutive years of playoff appearances. Other notable Wildcat accomplishments include: 4 Time Bi-District Champions 5 Time Regional Champions 5 Time Quarterfinalists 7 State Semi-final Appearances 5 Back-to-back State Semi-final Appearances 1 State Championship Appearance This year’s Wildcats are looking forward to another outstanding season, and are currently undefeated and ranked No. 3 in the state.
