Calallen Girls Power Lifters Win Second Place at
State. The Calallen girl’s team placed second at the Texas High
School Women's Power lifting Association State
power lifting meet this past Friday. The meet was held at the
Killeen Civic Center in Killeen, Texas. Calallen lifters
totaled 23 team points. Los Fresnos High School
won the meet with 24 points and Waller High School was
third with 20 points
Some outstanding performances were turned in by Calallen
lifters. First year lifter Lana Garcia won first place
in the class 4A 97-pound class. Her total of 620 pounds was
also the best total for any of the 97-pound state
champions in the five UIL classifications. For her
efforts,
she won the award as the composite State
Champion for her weight class. Jordan Scott, the current
state squat record holder in 123-pound class, shattered the
132-pound state squat record with a lift of 380
pounds. The old record was 345 pounds. Jamy Harvey,
competing in the 181-pound class, also shattered the old
record with a lift of 450 pounds. The existing record had
been 400 pounds. Jamy also holds the 165-pound state
record with a squat of 390 pounds at the 2003 state meet.
Overall, Calallen lifters broke or equaled 13 current school
records at this year's state meet. The second place team
finish follows their third place finish in 2003. With
five of this year's six state qualifiers returning, the Lady Wildcats are already setting their sights on capturing
that elusive state championship in 2005. Jamy Harvey is
the lone senior on this year's team and will be greatly missed. For her athletic and academic achievement,
Jamy was named as one of two lifters from
this region to win a THSWPA $500.00 scholarship to the college of her choice.
Jordan won the award for having performed the most
outstanding squat for any of the five UIL classifications in
the 97-148 weight classes. Jamy won the same award
for the 165-SHW weight classes. In other words, these
two girls are the strongest high school girl lifters in
the squat for the entire state of Texas based on the
amount of weight lifted multiplied by their body weight
coefficient. Jordan also won the same award at last
year's state meet. Not too bad considering there were almost
500 girls who competed at this year's state meet.

Calallen Boys Power Lifters Tie for 6th Place at State.
The Calallen boys team finished in a tie for sixth
place at the Texas High School Power lifting
Association State power-lifting meet this past Saturday. The
meet was held in Holfheinz Pavilion on the
University of Houston campus. Calallen lifters totaled nine
team points. La Marque High School won the meet with 16
points to edge out Aldine Nimitz who had 15 points.
Calallen lifters left the competition with three state medals
from the five qualified lifters. Michael Martinez placed
second in the 242-pound class with a 1630-lbs total,
only five pounds out of first place. His total included
a new state record squat of 725 pounds. The lift broke
the ten-year-old state record lift of 710 pounds by
Barron Henderson of Terrell High School in 1994. Daniel
Brubaker had an outstanding day in route to a third place
finish in the 123-pound class. His total of 1045 pounds
was only five pounds behind the second place finisher
from Mineral Wells and included a personal and
school
best squat of 430 pounds. Wes Huff won fifth
place in the 220-pound class with a personal best total of
1465 pounds. He joins a list of seven other Calallen
lifters who have squatted at least 600 pounds in
competition over the course of the four years that Calallen
has fielded a power lifting team.
Michael Martinez was also the recipient of a $1000.00
scholarship to the college of his choice. He was one of two
winners selected by the officers and directors of
the THSPA from this region. He joins Jamy Harvey and
Erin Fortney as previous winners of academic
scholarships awarded by the state associations. The winners
are selected based on their academic achievement, a
personal letter from the athlete, a letter from his or her
coach, and a letter from a teacher or administrator. The
state record squat by Michael now gives Calallen High
School lifters claim to five state squat records out of
the possible 22 available. Both Jamy Harvey and
Jordan Scott each own two weight class state record squats
and Kellen Becker currently holds the state record for
the 275 pound class dead lift for a sixth state record
by Calallen lifters.
“It was a great season for the Calallen power lifting
teams. We were disappointed in not winning the state titles
in both the boys and girls divisions because that
was our goal going into the meets. We went after
the regional meets with so much determination and with
such a great effort, that I think we may have peaked a
couple of weeks early this year,” Coach Asa Chambless
said. “However, for a young program with
three boys and six girls returning who qualified for
state this year, we will be back next year to give it
another shot.
The results of the Calallen Power Weight Lifters are as
