ropical Storm Erin has passed and the 10th annual CCISD McDonald's SpikeFest high school volleyball tournament is proceeding as planned.

The 32-team tournament begins at 11:30 a.m. today with eight pool play matches at two different sites and continues through Saturday's 2:30 p.m. championship division title match at Ray High School.

"We were on hold (because of the storm) to see if we were going to have to make any changes to the tournament but we're good now," CCISD athletic director Brenda Marshall said. "(Because of Corpus Christi's recent water problem), we also have some backup water bottles if we need them and we're sanitizing the ice machines (at the tournament sites Carroll High School and Ray High School as a precaution) as well."

While this year's tournament is smaller than last year's 40-team field, Marshall said that having eight fewer teams makes the tournament "more manageable" considering all of the matches can now be played at just two sites.

Despite the large amounts of rainfall in Central Texas because of the storm, Marshall said the original tournament field will remain the same, as teams such as Class 5A San Marcos and Fort Worth-area Class 2A school Peaster are still planning to travel to Corpus Christi to play in the tournament.

Last year, Calallen became the first volleyball team from Corpus Christi since 1999 (when King won it) to win the tournament's championship division.

The Wildcats will look to extend that streak to two in a row this weekend, although area volleyball heavyweights Carroll, Flour Bluff, King, Sinton and West Oso, among others, could have something to say about that as well.

"We definitely want to win the SpikeFest tournament again this season," Calallen volleyball coach Lupe Cardona said. "We have nine seniors and they want to play their best because they know they won't get (another chance) to next year."
