CORPUS CHRISTI — This was more like it.
Tuesday night's highly anticipated rematch between the Calallen and Flour
Bluff volleyball teams was much more entertaining than their first District
31-4A meeting.
State-ranked Calallen and its nine seniors pulled through in the end again,
however, as the Wildcats knocked off the upset-minded Hornets 25-23, 25-12, 25-23
at Flour Bluff High School.
Defending 31-4A champion Calallen (30-4 overall, 6-0 district) -- which dropped
six spots to No. 8 in the Texas Girls Coaches Association Class 4A state volleyball
rankings this week even though it hasn't lost a match since moving up to
No. 2 -- remained atop the district standings, while second place Flour
Bluff (17-12 overall) fell to 4-2 in district play.
Calallen also swept the Hornets in the previous district meeting between the teams,
but Tuesday's match proved to be much tougher for the Wildcats, who battled back
from a 19-16 Game 3 deficit to close it out.
"This is the Flour Bluff team that we expected to play tonight," Wildcats
coach Lupe Cardona said. "Both teams played such good defense tonight, and
we were "I'm very pleased with the way the girls responded against Calallen,
" Hornets coach Joni Luna said. "We competed tonight. We gave Calallen all
they wanted tonight."
The Hornets did just that, especially in the first and third games, which both went
down to the wire.
Flour Bluff had a chance to avoid the sweep in the finale, as junior Allison
Monette had six straight service points, including an ace, to give the Hornets
a 19-16 advantage.
Much like the rest of the match, however, it was an upperclassman answering
for the Wildcats.
After Calallen closed within two, senior OH/MB Angela Hook delivered one of her eight
kills on the night during Calallen's decisive 9-4 run to close it out.
Senior DS Tamara Wostal also contributed one of the Wildcats' six aces on the night
during the run, while senior OH Courtney Oertli and Hook also combined for two
kills to help Calallen put the finishing touches on the victory.
"They just don't give up -- they don't get flustered," Cardona said of the
Wildcats' seniors.
Luna agreed.
"Their big four (Kelsey Schwirtlich, Amanda Haven, Oertli and Hook) just stepped
up for them," she said. "Those seniors are a nice luxury to have."
Schwirtlich (who signed with Division I UTSA next season) led Calallen with nine
kills, while Oertli (who signed with Division I program Villanova) had a team-high
eight blocks. Junior MB Jackie Matula also had two blocks for the Wildcats, while
Haven and Oertli combined for 19 digs. Schwirtlich and Oertli combined for 26 assists.
Junior Kristin Halverson and senior C.J. Downey led the Hornets with six and five kills
respectively, while Flour Bluff senior MB Holly Watson (who signed with D-I
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi) had a team-high two blocks.
Monette and senior Mikeya Edwards combined for 21 digs for the Hornets, while
Flour Bluff setter Kindall Stephens added a team-high 14 assists.
