The Calallen High School volleyball team is already reaching new heights this season --
the Wildcats have climbed to No. 2 in the state in the latest poll.
Calallen (22-4 overall) is ranked second in this week's Texas Girls Coaches Association
Class 4A state volleyball poll behind top-ranked and unbeaten Hewitt Midway. That's the
highest state-ranking the Wildcats have ever received in volleyball.
"We're really excited to get this type of recognition," said Calallen coach Lupe
Cardona, whose team finished the regular season last year ranked 14th en route to
reaching the Region IV-4A semifinals for the seventh time. "The girls are playing
with a lot of fire right now and I think that state ranking has a lot to do with it."
Three of the defending District 31-4A champion Wildcats' four losses this season
have come to Class 5A teams (one of which was to returning state finalist San
Antonio Reagan), while the other came to returning Class 4A state finalist
Cedar Park Vista Ridge.
Calallen -- which placed seventh at the San Marcos tournament recently -- travels to
play Moody on Saturday morning. The Wildcats will then host George West Tuesday
night before starting district play Sept. 18 against Alice.
